The basic mechanics of the Frightening Frankie slot machine are traditional. I appreciate the developer’s classic approach, although not all players share this opinion. If you’re a fan of Pragmatic games and have well-honed winning strategies, you can apply them right from the start. The slot’s design evolves and new mechanics are introduced, but the core gameplay remains unchanged. A slight adjustment to your strategy will allow you to play effectively.
The game grid consists of 5 reels, each displaying 3 symbols. Winning combinations are formed on 20 fixed paylines. You win by lining up 3 to 5 identical symbols on a payline. The number of paylines is the same in both the base game and the bonus game. Wins are calculated only from left to right, starting with the leftmost reel. These are classic and familiar mechanics.
At the start of the game, you can choose your bet from a wide range, from $0.05 to $250 per spin. Furthermore, activating the Ante Bet feature will increase the maximum bet to $500, which will certainly appeal to high rollers. The bet can be adjusted at the beginning of each spin, but this option is unavailable during the bonus game.
Symbols
The amount of the winnings depends not only on the bet, but also on the symbol that makes up the winning combination. The moon, lightning bolts, torch, and monster castle are high-value symbols, offering multipliers ranging from x0.4 to x4.8. However, these wins occur infrequently.
Card symbols offer a high frequency of wins, but the multipliers are low, ranging from x0.2 to x1.6.
Frankenstein and the bottle are special symbols. The main character acts as a Wild, increasing the frequency of wins. This symbol can also form its own combinations on paylines and offer maximum multipliers ranging from x2 to x16. The bottle acts as a Scatter symbol and triggers the Free Spins round. I’ll come back to that later.
Features and bonuses
Let’s now move on to the bonus features of the Frightening Frankie game, because it is their activation that allows you to win big prizes and makes the game more interesting.
Lightning Free Spins Function
You activate a special free spins mode if you land one or more Lightning symbols on the reels during the base game. You will then receive a random number of free spins, between 2 and 6. Each Lightning symbol replaces the lowest-paying symbol on the paytable. The more Lightning symbols you land, the more high-paying symbols you have, and the bigger your winnings.
If you land another lightning bolt symbol during this mode, you’ll receive between 2 and 6 free spins, and another lower-paying symbol will be removed. This process continues until only one higher-paying symbol remains.
Monster Trail Free Spins Bonus Game
Land 3, 4, or 5 Scatter symbols on the grid to trigger 10, 15, or 20 free spins respectively. If you only land 2 Scatter symbols during the base game, a random feature may activate: lightning will strike the grid, giving you the chance to land the missing third Scatter symbol.
The bonus round starts with an initial multiplier of x2. All winnings made during free spins are doubled.
Another unique feature of the bonus round: 7 test tubes appear above the grid. They are empty, but if you land a full test tube on the grid, it fills them one by one. When all 7 test tubes are full, you receive 10 free spins and a random multiplier of up to x10.

The free spins round can be activated instantly. Bet 100 times your stake and you’re guaranteed to see between 3 and 5 Scatter symbols appear on the reels.
At any point during the game, you can activate the “Initial Bet” feature. This will double your bet and your chances of triggering the bonus round.
RTP and Volatility

In my tests, I didn’t observe volatility this high; I would classify it more as medium to high. However, with a small budget, it’s very difficult to make a significant profit. The base payout rate (RTP) is 96.53%, which is standard for games from this developer. However, alternative versions with RTPs of 95.53% and 94.53% exist, depending on the operator.
